Day 1: Today we did excavation up on the mountain side by the historic road. Our location was a rock shelter that seemed to be remnants of dynamite due to the soot on the walls. My group was group 2 and we were under Pulama, which is great because she is a great group leader. Our group split into two a few of us worked on a ledge in the rock shelter and the rest worked in a cave under another ledge. Once we were settled the first thing we did was profile mapping of the area we were going to excavate. After the profile map we set up nails at exactly 50 cm all around and 71 cm diagonal. We then measured how much we had to excavate for the first level and layer which it turned out was pretty much all there was before we hit bedrock L. In the end although it was fun all we found was fine silt, rocks, and gravel(Lots of gravel) .

Day 2: Today was the second day of excavation! My group (minus Pulama who missed this day) did excavation off the trail up to the heiau where they (meaning last year’s class) found possible lithics. My group on initial survey found a possible hammer stone ( very exciting) and Dr.Bayman agreed that it was . We then set up much like the day before except that there was much more earth to actually dig up and the nail stayed put (unlike last time ). Our group divvied up the responsibilities two people dug, two people sifted , and one person recorded. We switched up responsibilities so everyone could get a turn. We found bits of possible charcoal, worms, and shells. Another group found dog teeth and shark teeth which is pretty cool. Overall it was an awesome day!
