About the Field School

Building upon the success of its five-year archaeological field school, the University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa is offering an ethnographic and oral history field school on the North Shore in collaboration with Kamehameha Schools and the Waialua Hawaiian Civic Club. This weekend program offers students and community volunteers the opportunity to engage in a series of ethnographic studies that is designed to document, preserve, and honor the histories of the people in the Waialua district. This program is ʻāina-based and will focus on sustainable living of past and present people in the area. Students will be interviewing, mahiʻai, lawaiʻa, kiaʻi, and others. Cultural practitioners and other volunteers in the North Shore community will share their knowledge and perspectives with the field school at "talk story" events and hosted visits to cultural locales. Fieldwork during the 2019 semester will be centered in Kawailoa Ahupua‘a, Waialua District, O‘ahu.

The field school is only held during the Spring semester of the UH-Mānoa academic calendar. Undergraduate and Graduate students are encouraged to apply. The application process will begin in November and can be found on this page
